GPs consulting from Altona North Medical Hub are experienced in rail medical assessments. Alongside our highly capable nursing team, GPs practising from ANMH can guide workers through the entire process, all at the one convenient location. All examinations are carried out by doctors who are authorised through the RIW Program to assess rail industry personnel.

Railway medicals are broken up into three categories depending on the nature of the individual workers’ job.

Medical category-1 is the highest level of assessment, and applies to rail safety workers who perform high-level safety critical work.

Assessments for medical category-1 include:

  • Audiometry assessment
  • Visual assessment
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation
  • ECG
  • Psychological K10 questionnaire
  • Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)
  • Full medical examination: vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, urine
  • Drug testing

Medical category-2 is assigned to any position that requires a high level of attentiveness, but sudden incapacity or collapse from ill health doesn’t endanger the rail network. Positions that require this medical include for example signallers and train controllers, or individuals who may be working on a train platform.

Assessments for Medical Category-2 include:

  • Audiometry assessment
  • Visual testing
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation
  • Full medical examination: vital signs such as height, weight, blood pressure, urine
  • Drug testing

Medical category-3 is the minimum requirement to work within the rail corridor. Rail workers categorised as Medical Category-3 are at a lower risk, meaning if they fall ill, it will not directly impact the safety of the rail network or the public. Assessments are undertaken to ensure the rail workers are fit for assisting the commuters, and able to react quickly to an oncoming train and sudden warnings.

This includes following

  • Visual examination
  • Audiometry testing
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation
  • Drug testing
